Artificial turf where the grass has worn thin

For the part of the yard where kids and dogs run. We bring turf samples to the visit and tell you which spots catch the afternoon sun.

Artificial turf in the backyard of a shingled Craftsman house, running from the wooden back steps to a curved red brick mow strip, with clivia, ferns and dianella in the shade of an old avocado tree

Turf uses no water once it's down. It also heats up on summer afternoons in full sun. So we put it where people play and where some shade reaches, and we say so when a spot would be better planted.

Where turf works on your lot

  • The backyard. The patch the dog runs on or the kids play on, where the grass never recovers.
  • The front yard. A small, flat lawn beside the walk that browns every summer.
  • Around a patio. A strip between the patio and the beds, with a brick or concrete border where it meets them.

Turf is a poor fit on a steep bank or under a tree that drops leaves all year. For those spots we suggest planting or a path, and price that instead.

The spots that suit it usually look like this:

  • Grass worn to dirt where the kids play or the dog runs
  • A small lawn you water all summer and still lose
  • Muddy paws on the kitchen floor after rain
  • A corner in part shade where seed and sod never filled in

Where the heat decides it

Where either could go, your quote prices both for the same spot and names the one we would put there. The heat changes the answer from one part of LA to the next. Woodland Hills averages more than 100 days a year at 90°F or above, and Santa Monica fewer than 5. The same turf in full sun feels very different in those two yards, so a west-facing front lawn in the Valley often does better planted. For that side of the choice, see front yard and parkway planting.

One crew lead runs your whole job.

Whoever walks the lot with you at the free visit runs the build and the final walkthrough, and you get their direct number that day. A question about the slope or the side gate goes to the person who measured it.

How a turf job goes

  1. Yard visit. We come within 3 business days with turf samples. You hold them in the spot where they would go, and we measure the area.
  2. Your quote. By email within 1 business day of the visit, with turf and planting priced for the same spot where either could go.
  3. Start date. Confirmed in writing before any work begins.
  4. The install. The old grass comes out with its roots and the ground is leveled. The turf goes down in rolls, trimmed around the beds and paths. The seams are joined, and infill, where the turf you pick uses it, is brushed into the blades.
  5. Walkthrough. We go over every part with you and complete the turf maker's warranty registration together. What we build is covered for 1 year and what we plant for 12 weeks, with a check visit in that time.

What the turf price depends on

  • The area of turf, measured at the visit
  • The turf you pick
  • What has to come out: grass, roots or an old slab
  • Curves and corners around beds, which take more cutting
  • Borders where the turf meets planting or a walk
  • How the crew reaches the backyard from the street

What the turf gets

  • Turf laid where people play, cut neatly around beds and paths
  • A border where it meets the beds or the walk, if your quote includes one

Questions about artificial turf

Does turf get hot?

Yes, in full sun on a summer afternoon. That's why we mark the sunny spots with you at the visit. Shade from a tree or the house helps, and so does planting the hottest strip instead of covering it.

Can turf go in the side yard where nothing grows?

If the side yard is wide enough to play on, yes. A narrow one you only walk through usually does better with a paver or gravel path, and we'll tell you at the visit which we would put there.

Can we have turf in the back and planting in the front?

Yes. Each part has its own price on your quote, and we will say which we would use where.
